Passive House in Comparison

Comparison of energy consumption

A typical new build 4 bedroom semi detached house of 116m2 floor size in Scotland:

Approx. 150 kWh/m2a = 15,300 kWh/a heat energy consumption for conventional build (=1530 l of heating oil/a or 1530 m3 of gas)

Standard of a Passive House <15 kWh/m = 1530 kWh/a = 153 l heating oil

= 90% energy and CO2 emissions saving

Typical heating of a Passive House:

• Maximum power output for heating: 10 W/m

For a 116m2 house: 1160W

• The household appliances and people produce enough heat to cover this demand
• A person produces 60-160W heat
• Therefore there is no dedicated heating needed, just a back up heating, typically working through the controlled ventilation.
